Delivering a presentation in English as a non-native speaker is inevitably a challenge -- even if your English is very good. For scholars in the humanities (the vast majority of those involved in CRC 1472), that is even more the case than in fields like the STEM subjects where there is a highly standardized nomenclature for the materials and processes to be discussed, indeed a sort of "international scientific English" with a somewhat reduced complexity. In the humanities, the nuances of language are of prime importance. In the first part, we will briefly cover the basic steps of every presentation:

  • planning a presentation
  • audience-centred thinking
  • storytelling: structuring a story
  • visualising the story
  • PowerPoint or comparable tools
  • organisational and technical preparations

In the second -- longer and largely interactive -- part, we will focus on those aspects where language is key to delivering a confident presentation:

  • spoken vs. written language; the importance of pronunciation
  • speaking with or without manuscript support
  • expressiveness in the actual delivery (in a style that still fits your personality)
  • preparation for discussions (rebuttals, repartee)

In this part, participants are welcome to bring their own presentation examples.
