Der Artikel diskutiert eine Weiterentwicklung der Digital Methods im Kontext qualitativer Methodologien. Aus dieser Kontextualisierung leitet er ein Verfahren ab, das sowohl Digital Methods weiter methodologisiert als auch die medientechnischen Bedingungen qualitativer Kultur- und Sozialforschung unter den Bedingungen fortgeschrittener Digitalisierung reflektiert: "Medien-theoretisches Sampling" wird als Teil qualitativer Methoden skizziert, das Medientechnik bei der Datensammlung und -entwicklung einen ähnlichen Rang einräumt wie "Theorie" beim theoretischen Sampling der Grounded Theory Methodology. Mit Bezug auf eigene Forschung zur Geschichte des Online-Kommentars wird dieses Verfahren exemplifiziert.
