In her lecture Dr. Helen Young (Deakin, Melbourne) talks about the popularity of video games that engage with the popular Middle Ages. As culture productions they are interested in success and the desires of present audiences. Therefore, they do not wish to present a scientifically accurate picture of the Middle Ages. The video games that seem to be medieval or get recognised by players as “medieval” rather have to be described as medievalisms. The lecture investigates specific aesthetics in video games that make them appear “medieval”. The discussed games (for example Pentiment) often tend to have medievalist layers instead of showing the Middle Ages as a past epoch the player has to engage with.
