Popularisation

The term popularisation encompasses all practices that aim at getting noticed from many. We distinguish between first-order popularisation, the dissemination of expertise and high culture, and second-order popularisation, the dissemination of successes that can be measured and staged in charts and top lists. Since the 1950s and increasingly after the social establishment of social media around 2000, second-order popularisation conditions cultural evaluation regimes.
